X-Men: First Class

"In 1963, Charles Xavier starts up a school and later a team, for humans with superhuman abilities. Among them is Erik Lensherr, his best friend... and future archenemy."

I was always a Marvel boy, but I only ever skimmed the surface of the X-Men and all the spin-offs. It was all a bit confusing. We've had 4 X-Men related films and, whilst they started off alright they went horribly wrong.

The thing is, these films were nothing but a chain of set-pieces connected together. Its the problem with most superhero movies, they just aren't films they are Michael Bay's bastard children. There are a few exceptions but mostly this is the case.

I'm happy to report that X-Men: First Class is one of these exceptions. Its almost perfectly done.

Firstly, it makes a huge difference when you cast quality actors. The main players are all superb. Its perfectly paced and all the set-pieces hit the mark. Kevin Bacon is superb as are both Fastbender and McAvoy.

Origin films are always tricky and this is one of the best that I've seen. X-Men has never been about superheroes, it's about how people fear what they cannot understand. They try and exclude and destroy them. People often fail to appreciate this with superhero movies.
